Stephen
started his career in journalism, as many do, through hospital radio. He
began working at Radio Lonsdale, serving Furness General Hospital in Barrow
in Furness. |
There,
he gained expertise in radio broadcasting and technical equipment and prepared
basic news bulletins. This soon progressed into professional radio when he
started his degree course at Nottingham Trent University. Stephen was part
of the very first year of what was the very first undergraduate course in
Broadcast Journalism in the country. |
With Jon
Snow of Channel Four News as a visiting professor, he thrived with every
opportunity to develop his skills as a reporter, producer and technician
in the broadcast news environment. This quickly led him to a weekend reporting
and presenting contract on the city's most popular radio station at the time
Trent FM. |

It was
while working for Trent as a student that Stephen first broke the news of missing
baby Abbie Humphreys and supplied the Independent Radio News network, IRN,
with all their coverage on what was the biggest story in the country. He
also became an integral part of the investigation, working with Special Branch,
as they investigated calls from the suspected kidnapper to the radio station,
although this ultimately turned out to be a hoax. |
After
graduating, Stephen continued to work for the Radio Trent group in Nottingham
and Derby. After less than a year he was headhunted by ITN in London to produce
their programmes 'ITV Morning News' fronted by Denis Tuohy and 'ITN World
News' on NBC Superchannel. Stephen also stood in on occasion to present the
World News Updates. |
In
1997 he was poached again, this time by the launch team of Five News, still
part of ITN, where he started as Senior Producer on Five News Early, the
breakfast show anchored by Scott Chisholm and Becky Anderson (now with CNN).
Stephen quickly became Programme Editor, taking responsibility for editing,
writing, reporting AND picture editing for the programme. |
On top
of that, he then assumed the role of presenting the late night and 8 am Five
News Updates, making for a multi-skilled job second to none. |
In 2000
he left Five News to go freelance and started presenting 'Sky News on the
hour' as their regular overnight anchor. |
During
this time he also freelanced as Programme Editor of the Big Breakfast News
and presented Simply Money, a digital personal finance channel, alongside
Angela Rippon. Their main reporter was the now famous 'Money Saving Expert'
Martin Lewis. |
In 2003
Stephen started to work full time at Sky News, where he has presented every
single strand across the network, with particular stints on Sunrise, Sky
News Today, Live at Five and Sky News at Ten. Stephen is now one of just a
handful of presenters whose show is branded with their own name in the title,
so Sky News at Ten with Stephen Dixon is his permanent home. |

He is also
a regular stand in for Dermot Murnaghan, Eamonn Holmes and Kay Burley.
